Marietta City School District is thrilled to announce the hiring of Mary Schaeffer as the next Superintendent of Marietta City School District.

Schaeffer graduated with her undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University, before going on to get a Master’s and Doctorate in Education from Ashland University. During her extensive career in education Schaeffer has worked as both a teacher and administrator. She was an ELA teacher at the high school level for 5 years, an assistant principal  for 4 years and served as the Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for the North Point Education Service Center for 10 years.  Her most recent position was as Superintendent of Woodmore Local Schools, where she spent the last 3 years prior to becoming a Tiger.

During her time leading Woodmore she focused heavily on improving communication both within the district and to the community at large, she led strategic initiatives focused on improving student engagement and academic performance and she also spearheaded the development of the philanthropic 501©3 organization, the Woodmore Foundation.

Schaeffer has experience with grant writing, negotiating collective bargaining agreements with OAPSE and Teachers Unions, developing and implementing strategic plans and various community outreach programs. She looks forward to being able to bring these skill sets to both build on the foundations already in place at Marietta and hopefully open up new possibilities through these types of initiatives and grants.

Schaeffer was hired as Superintendent of MCSD after a very thorough process which included her being identified as a candidate from a third party consultant search firm, multiple interviews, visits to candidates home districts and even interviews conducted by key stakeholders from this district with the final two candidates.

Board President Cody Parman discussed in detail about how important it was for this district to not just rely on a typical job interview to find the right candidate for our district.

“Our decision was made with care, patience, and a tremendous amount of data — data that not everyone in the community had the ability to see firsthand. The Board had the privilege and responsibility of taking all these pieces together to form the full picture.”

Parman and the other board members voted unanimously to accept Schaeffer as the districts next superintendent during the April 2025 Board meeting. He mentioned how exciting of a time it is, and looks forward to see what Schaeffers leadership will bring to our district. ” Dr. Schaeffer’s unique set of skills, experience, and heart for education make her the right leader for this moment in our district’s story. We are thrilled to welcome her to the Marietta Tiger family!”

Schaeffer herself mentioned her excitement for this opportunity and that Marietta was a position she was very interested in for a number of reasons, including the beauty of the area, rich history and a community that is very much concerned with providing the best education possible to its youth.

“My family and I are truly excited to be joining the Marietta community. We already feel so welcomed and are looking forward to making this our home. Marietta Schools has an incredibly rich history, and I’m so honored to have been selected to join this team. I’m here to listen, to learn, and to work together with staff, students, and families to keep moving forward. My focus will be on building strong relationships, supporting a positive and inclusive environment, and championing the mission, vision, and values of Marietta City Schools.”
