At 100 + years, Washington School is the oldest school in Marietta City Schools.  Visitors are amazed by the high ceilings, lovely wood hallway floors, and the beautiful mural in the art room.  Oh, that this school could share some of the stories from all of those years!

Transformation has been occurring all summer in preparation for the 2021 – 2022 school year.   Washington is one of two Marietta schools which will now serve students in pre-school through second grade.   As in the past, staffing and programs for kindergarten through second grade is provided by Marietta City Schools. The two preschool classes are provided through the Ohio Valley Education Service Center.   Each preschool  class meets Tuesday through Thursday :   all day class is for students who will attend kindergarten the following school year,  half-day class is for younger (ages 3 and 4)  students.

Ask any staff member about consolidation and you will surely hear comments about the hard work involved in packing up and unpacking a classroom.  You may hear stories about the efforts of family members assisting with moving, unpacking, and painting the new classroom.  District employees  painted the main hall and 12 classroom walk-in closets, providing a much-needed face lift.

Six classrooms will enjoy new laminate flooring which replaced worn-out carpeting.

In June, k-2 teachers participated in professional development preparing to implement Bridges, our new math curriculum.  Bridges offers a much-needed change in math instruction that we believe will boost student understanding and reduce or eliminate math phobias for students and their parents.    The curriculum materials have arrived and excitement is high as grade level teams have begun meeting to organize their new materials and prepare for the first month of math instruction.

The 2021-2022 school year is a year of new beginnings for all of us.  After many years serving as principal of Harmar School,  Mrs. Cheryl Cook is now the Washington School principal.  The newly formed staff combines the talents of staff with previous experience at Harmar, Phillips, Putnam, and Washington. Everyone is eager to meet our parents and students as we start this exciting year.
