Safety notice

Parents and guardians of Marietta High School students:

Marietta Police Department and Marietta City Schools are asking you to speak with your child about safe and responsible behavior in our community.

Last week began this year’s installment of an annual game between students in grades 9-12 called Water Assassins, where 80 of our students are engaging in a student-organized competition to be the last team standing.

Unfortunately, this year we have seen an increase in reckless driving by students playing the game and an escalation of the game now impacting bystanders in unsafe situations.

“We are getting calls about this behavior repeatedly,” shares Sgt. Tyson Estes. “We want your children to have fun and enjoy the good spring and summer weather. But it needs to be done safely.”

Estes explained that student use of Orbeez water beads, both in their regular form and frozen, has already caused harm.

“If an innocent bystander is struck with a frozen Orbeez, your child will be charged with assault,” he says. “If there’s a car chase with this game, your child could lose their license.”

According to students, rules of the game are clear:

  • Use water guns only, use of Orbeeze disqualifies a team.

  • School is off-limits for the game.

  • When a student is clocked in at work they can not be hit by an opposing team.

  • Teams must be together when they get a person out.

Let us all remember to be safe, responsible and respectful and show our greater Marietta community our Tiger Pride.
