sayres winner

Jordan Sayres, a first grader at Washington Elementary, has won the AMVETS Local and District Americanism contest.

The contest is put on by AMVETS, a national veteran’s service organization open to anyone who has honorably served in the U.S. Armed Forces, including the National Guard and Reserves. Founded in 1944, AMVETS aims to enhance the quality of life for veterans and their families through advocacy, community service, and various support programs.

Bruce Haas, Public Relations Officer for the local branch of AMVETS Post 1788, discussed the contest and how it is one of many ways that the organization looks to give back to the community. “This is part of our Americanism contest that we run annually, there is a new theme each year and there are different rules for various grade levels.”

This year’s theme was “What does it mean to me to protect the flag?” Grades K-1 were invited to color an American flag and answer a few short questions, Grades 2-5 created a poster and Grades 6-12 wrote an essay. Students who win locally are given a cash prize and then entered at the district level and possibly even the state level.

Sayres was able to win over $100 because he won both the local and district level, so his work will now continue on to the state level of the contest.  We wish him the best of luck moving forward!

Marietta City School District is thankful to Marietta Ohio AMVETS Post 1788 for providing these types of opportunities for our students to participate in. You can find more information about this organization by visiting their website at https://www.amvets.org/
