Major academic subjects are reviewed and revised every five (5) years by teachers, administrators, support personnel and parents. In this way the curriculum reflects changes in research, methodology, technology, student needs, and state mandates.
Curriculum Development Cycle
2009-2010 - Science K-12 and Foreign Language at MHS
2010-2011- K-12 Language Arts
2011-2012 - Art K-12, Music K-12, Phys. Ed. K-12
2012-2013 - Technology Education K-12 (Ind. Technology, Computer Science,
PLTW, etc.), Health K-12
2013-2014 - Math K-12
Competency based education programs have been developed in the areas of language arts, mathematics and science. As committees reviewed these curriculum areas, they identified what they felt were the basic competencies students needed at each grade level/course and developed a curriculum emphasizing these competencies. Moreover, courses of study are aligned with the statewide achievement tests.
The information gained from this is helpful to teachers in instructional planning, student placement and evaluation, and communicating progress to parents.
Marietta City Schools provides a broad range of curricular opportunities beyond the basics. There is available to the exceptional student an excellent, well-balanced Talented and Gifted program. All students receive art, music, and physical education from certified specialists. High school students may take as many as four (4) years of instruction in foreign language as well as Advanced Placement courses in Spanish. Most of the major academic areas offer accelerated course offerings. Furthermore, junior and senior students may enroll in local college classes at no cost.
